Locked Out of Dating Apps? How to Meet People in Person

Whether it's a ban, burnout or a break, you can meet people without a swipe.

If a dating app banned or locked you out, do two things: use the app's official appeal if you think it was a mistake, and start meeting people in person while you wait. The second one is the part that works either way. Group outings, clubs and classes put you around the same people more than once, which is how most friendships and relationships actually start.

The official appeal pages

Each app has its own process, and it changes. Use these, not a blog or a "bypass" site:

Don't make a new account to get around a ban. It is generally against an app's terms, and Hinge says banned members can't open one at all.

Six ways to meet people without a profile

  1. A small group outing. A hike, paddle or fishing trip with a host and a group chat. You're doing something, so there's no pressure to perform. Start with joining a local outdoor group as a beginner.
  2. A run or walking club. Same time, same place, every week. See how to start a run club or a walking club.
  3. Open play pickleball. Rotating partners and a built-in reason to talk. How open play works.
  4. A supper club or potluck. What a supper club is.
  5. A game-day or watch-party group. How to go to a game as a group.
  6. A cars and coffee morning, if that's your thing. What it is.

Pick one and go three times. The first visit is awkward, the second is familiar, and by the third you know names. That is the whole trick, and our post on meeting people IRL goes deeper.

Why groups beat swiping when you're starting over

You meet people as a person rather than a photo. You see how someone acts, whether they show up and how they treat the group. You also have a built-in exit, because you can talk to the host or leave with the group. And there's no inbox waiting for you afterward.

A fair note about Catch. Catch of a Lifetime is not a way around a ban. We have our own rules: our Terms don't allow harassment, stalking or impersonation, and we remove accounts that break them. Outings are small, public and hosted, and members can report and block. If you were banned elsewhere for treating people badly, a new app won't fix that. If you were caught out by a mistake, or you're just done with swiping, read on.

On Catch, you can set a ZIP code and how far you'll travel, join an outing in one tap, share a private trip plan with someone you trust, and wave at the people you'd go out with again. Dating only matches dating, so if you're here for friends or adventure partners, nobody assumes otherwise.

Common questions

What should I do if a dating app banned me?

If you think it was a mistake, use the app's official appeal: Tinder's Appeal Center, Hinge's in-app appeal from the ban screen, or Bumble's dispute process. Don't make a new account to get around the ban.

How long do I have to appeal a Bumble ban?

Bumble's disputes page says that if your account was actioned in error you can appeal within six months. Check Bumble's own page for the current process.

How can I meet people without dating apps?

Join small groups that meet repeatedly: outdoor outings, run or walking clubs, open play pickleball, supper clubs or game-day groups. Go three times and you'll know people.

Is Catch of a Lifetime a way to get around a dating app ban?

No. Catch has its own Terms, which don't allow harassment, stalking or impersonation, and it removes accounts that break them. It is built around small group outings, not a replacement for an app that banned you.
