Open play pickleball is drop-in play: players show up at set times, and games rotate so everyone gets on court with different partners. You don't need to bring a partner or book a court. You put your paddle in the line, wait your turn and play a game, usually to 11. Then the winners and losers come off and the next four go on. It's the easiest way to start playing and to meet people who play.
How open play works
- The paddle line (or paddle rack): players put their paddles in a rack or line by the courts. The next four paddles go on the next open court.
- Rotation: after each game, all four players usually come off and go to the back of the line. Some places use "winners stay, split up" or "four on, four off". Ask what the local system is.
- Skill sessions: many places split open play by level, such as beginner (2.0 to 3.0), intermediate (3.0 to 3.5) and advanced (4.0 and up), so games stay fun for everyone.
- Cost: public park courts are usually free. Rec centers and clubs charge a drop-in fee or include it with membership.
How to find open play near you
- Search "open play pickleball" plus your town, or "drop in pickleball near me".
- Check your city's parks and rec site and community center schedules. Most list open-play hours by day and level.
- Use court-finder apps and directories like Places2Play from USA Pickleball, or Bounce.
- Ask at the courts. The regulars know when the good games are, and often have a group chat.
Open play etiquette
- Play your level's session. If you're new, start at beginner open play. Advanced players appreciate it and you'll have more fun.
- Don't cut the paddle line or save a court for friends during open play.
- Call the score before every serve, and make line calls on your side generously.
- Introduce yourself to your partner, and say "good game" at the net.
- Get off the court quickly when the game's over. Pick up balls on the way out.
Going alone (everyone does)
Open play is built for people who show up alone. You'll play with three different people every game, and after a few sessions you'll know names and have standing games. New to the rules?
